Based on a true story, “Millie’s Butterflies” by Dori Scarano takes its reader on a journey of tender, yet raw, emotion in the experience of love and loss. Even the warm Autumn breeze of Southern California can’t calm the chill that grips Carly Summer when she learns of her dear mother Millie’s daunting – and likely hopeless—battle with stage IV cancer.

Leaving the California coast behind, along with her dubious love life, Carly treks back to her New Jersey roots to face the realities of impending loss and three grown sisters teetering on the brink of the worst kind of heartbreak. The author draws you in as you share the experiences of anger, diversion, laughter, tears, blame and fear as the vulnerable remnants of the Summer household emerge into a new understanding of the bonds of sisterhood and its ability to weather the storms that life churns their way.

Millie Summer sets her sights on a mansion in heaven, but Carly has her doubts and after debates on the truth of divinity Millie vows to send Carly a sign when she’s safely reached the other side. Sign or no sign – Carly’s intent on pulling the Summer sisters together, or risk having them forever torn apart.

Dori Scarano’s debut novel showcases her skill as a wordsmith and ensures she leaves her reader wanting more.

Millie's Butterflies" is a navigational road map for mending hearts, restoring relationships and finding the courage to let go.

Very touching and insightful true-to-life story of loss and love. The characters are truly "human" - the author brings out the best and worst in them, but always love prevails.

Wow... a winner here
Like an earlier reviewer mentioned... this genre of books is not my first go to option but I picked it up last weekend and finished it by Sunday night. Having lost a mother myself, I could empathize with the author and her family as they struggled to come to grips with the reality of losing a parent and the challenges of living so far away from our loved ones in time of crisis. Couldn't believe that it held me hostage... I couldn't put it down ---waiting to see how the story unfolded. Page after page... it was compelling.

... life and how death can profoundly change everything for better or worse
A very touching story of life and how death can profoundly change everything for better or worse. A beautifully written story about how love and loss can effect you. The story pulls you in and won't let you go until the last word. I like how everyone bonds together to help each cope with their own demons. I'm glad it ended the way it did and how life goes on, not the same, but with hope. Kudos to the author as she bared her soul for all to see. So glad I read it.
